Georgia’s Electorate Is Drifting Blue

The once reliable Red State has shifted so much that it is now a certified swing state. (Washington Post)

This is where Biden picked the lock and grabbed Georgia’s electoral votes. The suburban counties outside Atlanta, growing faster than any other part of the state, obliterated their old turnout records Nov. 3. The president improved on his 2016 totals, adding more than 37,000 votes, but Biden ran 188,000 votes ahead of Clinton, for the best showing of any Democratic presidential candidate since the passage of the Voting Rights Act 55 years ago. There simply weren’t enough Republican votes in rural Georgia to make up for those Democratic gains.

Democrats are delighted to bring Georgia and Arizona into the swing state fold but need to try and hold on to them to avoid a North Carolina. The Tar Heel State voted for Obama as far back as 2008 but has since drifted back to more of a Red State kind of place. Texas was the big prize this election cycle but Democrats failed to stake a claim primarily due Trump’s surprisingly strong showing among Hispanic voters in the southern portion of the state. There are many lessons to be learned from all these statistics.
