House Republicans are planning a vote on Wednesday to remove Rep. Liz Cheney from the No. 3 position in caucus leadership after she vocally rebuked Donald Trump, a move that signals the party’s refusal to abandon the former president.

Cheney, who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 riot, responded to the former president’s most recent claim last week that the 2020 election was “fraudulent,” calling his words “THE BIG LIE.” And she remained defiant on Tuesday evening, describing his claims as a threat to democracy.

The GOP is still dominated by the man from Mara Lago despite attempts from some in the party to distance themselves from him. Efforts to create a gulf between the former President and the rest of the party is met with swift and intense rebuttal not only from Trump but his minions that still populate the GOP. Rep. Cheney will have a long tough row to hoe but she may be successful if the next election cycle proves to be another rejection of Trump and Trumpism.
