The University of Michigan has reached a $490 million settlement with former athletes and other U-M students who sued the school saying they had been sexually assaulted by the late Dr. Robert Anderson, a former football team doctor, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the settlement.

The exact terms of the settlement were not immediately available. More than 1,000 former athletes and other U-M students have sued the university in federal court. Many of the suits, including the first filed, were filed anonymously. The suits claim the university failed to act when it knew Anderson was sexually assaulting students.

Sexual assault survivors are speaking out and making their voices known. Untold number of people were abused at institutions around the Globe but no one wanted to discuss sexual assaults let alone pay money to survivors in the aftermath. That calculous is changing with more and more survivors telling their stories and letting organizations and institutions know that what happened to them was not OK and to never let it happen again to anyone else. There will be more stories and more settlements, many wrongs have yet to be righted.
