Jim Toy, LGBTQ+ rights pioneer who was believed to be the first openly gay man in Michigan, died New Year’s Day at age 91. He leaves behind an inimitable legacy.

Across Michigan, politicians, community organizers and activists, and those who’ve been touched and inspired by Toy are reacting passionately to his passing. From Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingel and University of Michigan President Dr. Mark Schlissell, it’s clear they’ll never forget Toy’s important, life-changing contributions to the LGBTQ+ community locally and beyond.

Jim Toy, who lived in Michigan passes away and we are all less because of his passing. He was a kind and familiar face around town, someone you knew was a living legend that made life for all of simply more possible. He pioneered gay rights in the middle of America which is a feat in itself. Far away from the coasts he was AHEAD of the coasts in his remarkable ability to advocate for LGBTQ rights and help establish gay rights organizations when there were few other gay rights organization in Michigan, New York or anywhere. He was there doing the work and putting the time in and in the process became a role model for countless other advocates around the country. Rest in power Jim Toy.
