Amazon Ramps Up Hiring At Unprecedented Pace.

With consumer purchasing rapidly moving to cyberspace, Amazon needs more boots on the ground. (NY Times)

The spree has accelerated since the onset of the pandemic, which has turbocharged Amazon’s business and made it a winner of the crisis. Starting in July, the company brought on about 350,000 employees, or 2,800 a day. Most have been warehouse workers, but Amazon has also hired software engineers and hardware specialists to power enterprises such as cloud computing, streaming entertainment and devices, which have boomed in the pandemic.

Amazon’s tentacles reach everywhere and seem to dwarf the power and might of Wal Mart. In my hometown of Toledo, which I visited over the holiday, a massive new Amazon warehouse is rising on the ashes of a former mall that once occupied the space. The same thing is happening all over the country with the online behemoth constantly in search of large tracts of land to build their nondescript buildings thus ensuring everyone receives their products in 2 days. As the article points out, the more places Amazon does business the more its economic and political clout will be that more impressive. Don’t head to Wal Mart for small business Saturday just yet though:)
