In Afghanistan-What’s Next?

As Afghanistan fell to the Taliban in a matter of days, no one knows what is next for the country. (ABC News)

Taliban
They’re worried that the country could descend into chaos or the Taliban could carry out revenge attacks against those who worked with the Americans or the government.

Many also fear the Taliban will reimpose the harsh interpretation of Islamic law that they relied on when they ran Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. Back then, women were barred from attending school or working outside the home. They had to wear the all-encompassing burqa and be accompanied by a male relative whenever they went outside. The Taliban banned music, cut off the hands of thieves and stoned adulterers.

What comes next for the Afghanistan and the Taliban is anybody’s guess at this point but there are very concerning developments since the takeover. The respect for women is certainly not present and the extremist religious fundamentalism is still present in the Taliban’s ethos. Combined with the undeniably brutal force that has been exhibited thus far, the nation is going to be in for a tumultuous period marked by little respect for human rights. We must take in Afghan refugees because we caused this mess.
