GOP Meager Efforts To Rein In The President.

Several Senate Republicans are seeking to rein in President Trump’s plans for Venezuela amid concerns that the president may deploy thousands of U.S. troops to South America.

The vote last week to advance a measure to limit Trump’s military authority reflects growing uncertainty among Senate Republicans that they know where the president’s foreign policy agenda is headed.

“It’s the innuendo about, ‘Colombia, you better watch out.’ ‘Mexico, you better watch out.’ ‘Greenland, we’re going to take over you,’” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), one of five Republican senators who voted to send the measure to the floor for a vote.

“Ordinarily, you would just say those are just bluffing words,” she said, summarizing Trump’s threats to topple other regimes or assume control over other territories. “But when you see he didn’t bluff there with Venezuela, it does cause you to just step back and say, ‘What else is being planned?’

As America enters unchartered territory with a new emboldened Executive office, any attempt to curtail these actions are noteworthy. The noteworthiness primarily stems from the fact the actors trying to rein in the President will undoubtedly receive immediate blow back and threats of intimidation. The action in Venezuela does not appear to have an endgame and the rest of Latin America is now on edge.
