Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, who since the insurrection at the Capitol has become the Republican Party’s most forceful critic of former President Donald Trump, was ousted from her House seat by Trump-backed Harriet Hageman, CNN projected Tuesday.

In Alaska, voters were casting ballots in another race the former President is focused on, with Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski squaring off in the first of what’s likely to be two rounds against the Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka.

The Republican Party is increasingly becoming beholden to one man who now has extraordinary sway among the rank and file and therefore controls the caucus. Donald Trump remains a very serious contender in national politics even as he faces increased scrutiny of actions he took just before leaving the Oval Office after he lost the 2020 election. His ability to control the party is causing major rifts among certain elite GOP factions but the every day GOP voter continues to be enamored and therein lies the crux.
