Evictions Expected To Spike As Moratorium Ends.

The eviction moratorium is set to expire which could leave millions of Americans out in the cold as evictions are expected to spike (ABC News)

The Biden administration announced Thursday it will allow a nationwide ban to expire. It argued that its hands are tied after the U.S. Supreme Court signaled the moratorium would only be extended until the end of the month.

House lawmakers on Friday attempted but, ultimately failed, to pass a bill to extend the moratorium even for a few months. Some Democratic lawmakers had wanted it extended until the end of the year.

“Struggling renters are now facing a health crisis and an eviction crisis,” said Alicia Mazzara, a senior research analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Income inequality is a glaring problem in America that has been exacerbated by the once in millennia pandemic. The moratorium on evictions gave renters from coast to coast some breathing room to stabilize their finances. Now as the moratorium expires, renters will face a stark reality that could lead to greater spikes in Covid-19 cases as they are cast out into the street. Direct financial assistance to these renters is needed to stave off another disaster directly related to the Coronavirus pandemic.
