Appalachian Angst, Still Voting In The Red Column However.
Appalachia, racked by opioids and unemployment, will still vote for Trump in this election.
“Mr. Trump’s tax cuts have helped, some say, but other initiatives have not. Two opportunity zones, which offer investors tax breaks for buying into building projects, now blanket most of the town. But the program has only spawned one deal, a hotel, and its construction has stalled. Window frames jut at precarious angles from its shell.”
The president’s appeal transcends the tactile and is geared at the emotions of his supporters. Little has changed in lives of people in the poorest regions of the country but they look to Trump as someone who can comfort them in their continued misery, as if to say it’s ok, the circus that has been created is somehow going to help you in the long run. Many are taking comfort in the omnipresence he seems to subconsciously instill.
