Shutdown Fever Once Again Grips The Beltway.

Lawmakers are racing to avoid a partial shutdown by Friday’s funding deadline, an effort that grew more difficult over the weekend after leaders failed to reach a deal — and traded barbs on who is responsible for the holdup.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced on Sunday that Congressional leaders had not yet reached an agreement on compromise spending bills, blaming House Republicans for the delay. But Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) shot back, placing the onus on “new Democrat demands” in negotiations.

A crisis of the government’s own making is the ever looming, never ever ending threats of a shutdown that conjure up mental images of Grandma not getting her Social Security check. The budget deficit grows ever larger with constant bi-monthly reminders in the form of debt ceiling votes is a stark reminder of how dysfunctional governing has become. The votes in a Presidential Election year are especially poignant and draw more intense scrutiny than normal with the stakes as high as they get. Here we go again.
