Brazil’s Left Turn May Benefit The Amazon.

On Sunday, Brazilians elected Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known colloquially as “Lula,” to replace Bolsonaro. Da Silva, who was also the country’s president from 2003 through 2010, has pledged to protect the precious rainforest.

“Let’s fight for zero deforestation,” he said after winning the election.

“Brazil will fight for a living Amazon; a standing tree is worth more than thousands of logs — that is why we will resume the surveillance of the entire Amazon and any illegal activity, and at the same time we will promote sustainable development,” he added.

Climate change and global warming are affecting every aspect of life across the globe. The health of the Amazon Rain Forest is integral to the health of Earth and the overall environment. Tragically, the Amazon has suffered immense deforestation in recent years which has resulted in catastrophic consequences all over the planet. Government policies are key to stemming the damage humans keep doing to extraordinary places like rain forests. Let’s hope the newly elected Brazilian leaders turn things around.
