A new study estimates that life expectancy in the United States decreased by nearly two years from 2018 to 2020, primarily due to the coronavirus pandemic, marking the largest drop since World War II.

The study, published this week in the medical journal The BMJ, estimates that from 2018 to 2020, average life expectancy in the U.S. decreased by 1.87 years, from 79 to 77.

The Covid-19 Pandemic upended American life like few other things ever have since nation’s founding. Unfortunately, a declining American life expectancy got ever shorter due to the deadly virus that ripped through every corner of the nation. As America begins to return to normal the ills present before the pandemic such as opioid deaths are still present and have even gotten worse. The country must address and come to terms with drug addiction, income inequality, and systemic racism to fully recover from the disaster that was 2020.
