Britain Boils.

The British Isles are experiencing an unprecedented heat wave that is upending daily life. (NY Times)

With trains slowing to a crawl, schools and doctors’ offices closing, and the government urging people to work from home, Britain girded on Monday for what recordkeepers said could be the hottest day in its history, with temperatures forecast to soar near 40 degrees Celsius (about 104 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of the country.

For Britain, usually a land of scudding clouds, frequent showers and temperate weather, the scorching heat was enough to hobble much of the country. Some train services were being canceled, while others were running at reduced speeds out of fear that the heat could cause tracks to become unstable.
