Members of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops released a document clarifying that they will not create “a national policy on withholding Communion from politicians,” seeking to tamp down on escalating debate within the church over banning communion for President Biden.

The move came days after a committee voted to begin creating a teaching document on the Holy Eucharist, or the meaning of communion, sparking questions about whether or not the document would include guidelines for politicians who support abortion rights such as Biden.

President Biden’s beliefs broadly align with Catholics in America today. His beliefs, however , are in incongruent with the extreme right wing Bishops that have become the majority in America and are becoming louder and louder in the proclamations and denunciations. The continued alienation of Catholics that are not in lock step with the extreme conservatism emanating from American church hierarchy are finding there is no place for them despite the election of the most liberal Pope in decades. The MAGA culture has seeped into the halls of American Church and it may takes years to weed out.
