The vote comes just days before the five-year anniversary of when then-President Obama nominated Garland to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Republicans, who then controlled the Senate, refused to give Garland a hearing or a vote.

Merrick Garland will head the Justice Department after being confirmed by the Senate. Thwarted from being nominated to the Supreme Court because Mitch McConnell famously blocked a vote, Merrick Garland now has an opportunity to shape America’s criminal justice system. The Justice Department desperately needs a return to normalcy after the prior Administration utilized the department for purely partisan endeavors. Attorney General Garland will do wonders to shore up the dismal morale that plagues the department which led to scores of career prosecutors leaving for greener pastures.
