Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Monday over monkeypox — an action intended to boost California’s efforts to secure vaccines and manage the outbreak.

California is the second state to make an emergency declaration because of the disease after New York, which took the step over the weekend. Local emergencies were declared by New York City and San Francisco.

Monkeypox is the latest disease to emerge in and spread in America and is causing a health crisis from coast to coast. The disease is well known in other parts of the World but is now just emerging as a health threat in Europe and North America. Unfortunately, the time to contain the virus appears to have come and gone and we are now confronting an endemic virus that shows no sign of dissipating. Inoculating vulnerable populations is now the most important means to stem the tide of infections.
