The nightclub shooting in Colorado was a horrific event that caps off a year when LGBT people have been under constant threat not only of violence but threat of being erased from the broader culture. Under the guise of parental rights, certain groups have attempted to erase any mention of LGBT people in schools and libraries thus creating an ‘other’ class of people. The result of removing people from ‘us’ and relegating them to ‘other’ makes it far easier to perpetrate violence against those individuals. The results of these efforts are becoming much clearer.
