Lack Of Truckers Compounds The Supply Chain Mess.

Trucking is not attracting enough people to the profession notorious for long hours and strain on the body. (NY Times)

Truck drivers have been in short supply for years, but a wave of retirements combined with those simply quitting for less stressful jobs is exacerbating the supply chain crisis in the United States, leading to empty store shelves, panicked holiday shoppers and congestion at ports. Warehouses around the country are overflowing with products, and delivery times have stretched to months from days or weeks for many goods.

The supply chain will be key to the economy getting back to normal. If supermarket chains continue to have empty shelves and consumers are precluded from purchasing their favorite products then the public will have little hope of a happy life post pandemic. The trucking industry must do something to ease the work and body strain that is part and parcel of a trucking career. What that looks like I have idea but automation has to be introduced into the field either through driverless trucks or robotic integration. The supply chain has to improve and there is not much time left to fix it.
