Ontario provincial police have mobilized outside Ottawa’s city center Thursday, in what appears to be preparation for a promised clampdown on protesters who have paralyzed the city for more than two weeks.

In the early morning, police officers were seen leaving a convention center near the airport where they had gathered and were entering their vehicles. Police vehicles, which had filled a large parking lot, began to leave.

Five municipal buses and two motor coaches were seen idling on a street adjacent to the convention center.

Ottawa police officers patrolling the entrance to the parking lot would not confirm why they were gathered there.

Prime Minister Trudeau is facing the most important challenge of his tenure. The anti-vaccine protests are roiling the nation like nothing has in recent Canadian memory. However, Covid 19 restrictions are easing across the Canada and the United States in what could be perceived as acquiescing to the demands of protestors but is more likely due to the dramatic reduction in viral transmission. The restrictions are likely to return if another Covid variant emerges that once again threatens the health of society at large. Hopefully that won’t happen.
