“The Civil Rights Act is a sacred pillar of freedom in our country. It is not amended lightly,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a House floor speech Thursday afternoon. She thanked members of the Congressional Black Caucus who “gave their imprimatur to the opening of the Civil Rights Act to end discrimination against LGBTQ Americans.”

The election of President Biden has given the LGBTQ community great hope for the future with numerous advances seen in just the first month of the new administration. The advancement of LGBTQ rights will continue for the near future as long as Democrats hold all three levers of power in Washington DC. The Senate still must vote on the measure, but this bill would have been dead on arrival in the Trump Administration. Congressional makeup could dramatically change next year and the sense of urgency to pass pro-equality bills is palpable. The future is never certain, especially in Washington DC.
