Think Tank Dark Money, It’s Everywhere.

Washington’s think-tank industry, which sets the terms of debate for so much of American policymaking, is floating on a sea of foreign-government and Pentagon-contractor dollars.

That’s the conclusion of a brand-new report out this morning and shared with me by a pair of scholars at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a think tank that officially eschews foreign-government money — and delights in tweaking the Beltway foreign-affairs establishment.

Most policy makers in Washington know little about policy and vote with their part on the bills that come before them. The few policy makers that know their stuff and are committed to researching topics often rely on the Washington think tank machine to generate backing for the types of laws they want to enact. I interned for one of these think tanks in Washington that so often dictates the terms of the debate on important policy. Knowing where their funding is coming from should be important.
