Senators Agree On Bi-Partisan Gun Control Bill 4 Weeks After Uvalde.
A group of Senators were able to come to an agreement on a gun control bill spurred on by the recent mass shootings in Buffalo and Texas. (The Hill)
“Senate negotiators at long last struck a deal to combat gun violence on Tuesday, marking the culmination of weeks of talks following a spate of tragic shootings and years of inaction on the topic.
A bipartisan group of senators announced the deal on Tuesday night, which hung in the balance in recent days as the two sides haggled over the final details of the proposal. However, the 80-page bill incentivizes states to set up red flag laws, directs billions of dollars in funding for mental health treatment, close the “boyfriend” loophole and enhance background check requirements for individuals under 21 who have juvenile criminal records. Those involved hailed it as a “breakthrough” piece of legislation (The Hill).”
Gun Control is always on the minds of the public and legislative leaders around the country in the immediate aftermath of a mass shooting. However, our constant 24 hours a day news cycle rapidly moves on to the next big story and brings the rest of then nation along. The impetus thus quickly fades until the next mass casualty event once again jolts the nation into action. This time may be different with actual legislation coming the the collective outrage shared by millions around the nation and the Globe.
