Trump’s Now Pro-Choice, Sort Of?

Trump’s attempt to have it both ways on the fraught issue — calling himself “the most pro-life president ever” and taking credit for the fall of Roe v. Wade while also shunning the priorities of the anti-abortion groups that helped elect him in 2016 — has exposed those groups’ struggle for relevance in a lopsided primary and highlighted ongoing divisions inside the movement.

The anti-choice movement has been so very powerful in American politics for 50 years with the end goal of ending protections afforded under ‘Roe V. Wade’. They won, sort of, and that law has been overturned but in many ways the battle is now just in a whole new arena and that is in the State legislatures. Abortions are still happening at largely the same rate as before but now the politics is muddied with some in the GOP resisting stricter anti-abortion laws because the don’t translate well at the ballot box. This has left many flummoxed.
