Many in Washington thought Kevin McCarthy would have trouble controlling his party enough to be able to lead effectively. Those fears were somewhat quelled in the spring when Congress passed spending bills to keep the government open until past the 2024 election. Making good on those agreements, however, is another matter in the House because there is a serious threat of a government shutdown under McCarthy’s watch. All eyes are on a small group of Republicans who bitterly opposed McCarthy to begin with.
