Iowa Turns Red.

Iowa, once a part of the blue wall, has decidedly turned into a red state with little hope of electing many Dems in the near future. (NY Times)

Then in 2016, Mr. Trump pulled Iowa more sharply to the right than any state in the country. The trend continued in 2020, when he ran up wider margins against President Biden than he had against Hillary Clinton in most Iowa counties.

Some Democrats believe there are pathways to winning back the working-class voters the party has lost here and in places like it. They point to Mr. Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan, the subject of tense negotiations in Washington, which would bring a surge of spending on roads, bridges, child care and clean energy. In Iowa, there are more structurally deficient bridges than any state in the country.

Donald Trump pierced the Midwestern Blue Wall in the 2016 election with his demagoguery that he expertly disguised as a populist message which resonated across large swaths of the country. Some states appear to have migrated permanently to the Red column politically, however, changes in voting patterns can happen rapidly. Just ask Iowa Democrats. The industrial midwest has suffered greatly in the last 25 years and often feels left by behind by other parts of the country. Through fierce determination and hard work, the Midwestern Blue Wall was partially re-assembled for the 2020 election. The biggest question in the zero sum game of modern American politics is.. will the wall hold in 2024?
