The world’s two remaining superpowers presaged the meetings with elaborate public posturing, unveiling dueling agendas that appeared to offer little space for common ground amid disagreements over trade, Tibet, Hong Kong, the western Xinjiang region and the coronavirus pandemic.
Blinken cited China’s actions in those areas as threats to “the rules-based order that maintains global stability” at the top of Thursday’s meeting, which included Yang, China’s State Councilor Wang Yi and U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

The United States and China, the two remaining super powers are not getting along in the sand box. The two nations have economic interests so intertwined that untangling them would be nearly impossible and therefore tacit agreements are the only way forward until broader cooperation arrangements can be worked out for the economic interests of both powers.

The cyber security front is the new war that China is trying to wage by syphoning off technological innovations and using them to gain an advantage. These efforts by the Chinese government remain stumbling blocks for broader security agreements.
