At the heart of the case is the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting and lays out the standard for determining when it exists. Section 2 of the law says any measure which “results in a denial or abridgment of the right of any citizen of the U.S. to vote an account of race or color” is illegal.

The Voting Rights Act already gutted needs to be strengthened not weakened to ensure that people across the county have the ability to cast a vote. Clearly there are many forces in the country that are trying to strip voting rights from certain groups so only certain people are elected. Trust in the voting system is already severely damaged because of Donald Trump’s blatant lies. Weakening the Voting Rights Act will only serve to further denigrate our democracy in the eyes of the public.
