a Trump Rally with the President’s back to the audience
The evidence of these divisions can be seen as Mr. Trump has stepped up his campaign travels, ignoring the counsel of his own public health experts while mocking Mr. Biden for taking a cautious approach to holding large events. The president’s rallies are filled with people standing shoulder-to-shoulder, not wearing masks. At a rally this month in Latrobe, Pa., Mr. Trump made fun of Mr. Biden for wearing a mask. “It gives him a feeling of security,” he said to laughter.

Incredibly, the general public still has a healthy distrust of science. Simply believing people who are more educated on a topic is just too difficult for some and they follow the urge to universalize their own observations. Many of these people live in areas not severely affected by the the pandemic, therefore in their mind no place can be impacted to the extend the media claims because they don't personally see it out their front doors.
